A COVID CHRISTMAS

Last year most of my family got COVID for Christmas, and somehow I came up negative. This year it's the inverse, I'm the only one to get COVID for Christmas. Yesterday everyone tested negative and I tested positive (3x just to make sure... a friend had an older at-home test kit that they dropped off and it showed a faint positive result, and a friend dropped off a new 2-pack kit that I went ahead and used both tests and each one came back positive.) So far I only have very mild symptoms that started a couple of days ago - mild sore throat, occasional slight fever (100), random mild cough, and a very weird slight nausea. Otherwise, I have full energy. Over the past 13 days I've only been around family except for a few visits to see my Mom in the hospital as well as Home Health Nursing / Physical Therapists coming out to my parent's house, one time grocery shopping, and 14 days ago we had our Annual Banquet. I'm quarantining at home for 2 weeks. Hopefully I can get caught up on some office work and home renovations. (-Doug)

OUR GREATEST VIDEO EVER!! ...GOD'S AMAZING PLAYGROUND! ....WAY TO GOOOOO CARSON!

 

We debuted our newest GTD highlight video at our Annual Banquet... hands down, it's our greatest highlight video EVER! Carson did a PHENOMENAL JOB with every second of this video. 

 

One of our catch phrases in GTD is that we refer to God's creation as God's amazing playground. This video gives you a lot of drone footage - almost like a view from Heaven - and then as you zoom in to these extraordinary locations you see us (GTD groups) playing on the side of mountains, in waterfalls, in swamps, in canyons, in fields. Everything that God created is a gift to us - His created - to enjoy. He is the Good Father, and I can only imagine that He is most pleased when His kids joyfully appreciate, fully embrace, and completely enjoy His provisions which, in this case, is the world that He so masterfully made for us to live in and enjoy, and that literally reveals the evidence and majesty of God.

  

The video opens with a one minute audio of Taylor Richardson sharing how God used His creation to reveal Himself and draw her to Jesus as her Savior on a GTD trip. 

  

I've watched this video many times and I get chills everytime... Laurie cried the first time she watched it... the banquet audience enthusiastically cheered when they watched it. It's very powerful. I couldn't be prouder of Carson.

   

All footage is authentic footage taken on GTD Events in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, & The Grand Canyon. God's creation is the greatest & most amazing playground ever designed! Great job God!

ER

We had to take Mom to the ER today (technically yesterday)... she couldn't walk, extremely confused, talking gibberish, exhausted, not feeling well, and some other things that were all drastically different than she was only 2 days ago. They would only let 1 person go in the ER with her so Traci stayed with her until she was admitted to the hospital and visiting hours ended. Mom was positive for a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) which may be causing all of these symptoms... they are running more tests to see if there are any other issues. We hope to know more tomorrow (technically later today).

WONDERFUL NIGHT! $40K RAISED!...PLUS 42K PRE-RAISED = 82K!!!....AMAZING TESTIMONIES! PTL!!!

 

I got to bed at 3.30am, but I wanted to get a quick update posted this morning for all of our awesome supporters and prayer warriors. The Annual Banquet was an overwhelming success... beautiful venue with a very elegant touch... phenomenal army of volunteers setting up and breaking down in record time... a packed house of THE BEST supporters... delicious food & gourmet coffee... extremely talented pianist... amazing testimonies of how God used our tiny unique ministry to change lives and save souls... the greatest GTD HIGHLIGHT VIDEO EVER MADE... wall to wall GTD swag... record breaking night of donations... full and overflowing hearts... WONDERFUL NIGHT!!!! PTL!!!

 

Our caterers were fantastic... they had a couple of hiccups that pushed the timeline off (sort of like a typical GTD event LOL)... so I scrambled all night long to rearrange the agenda like a quarterback calling audibles at the line of scrimmage to try to still fit everything in... our wonderful guests and attendees rolled with it so well and voluntarily stayed later for final testimonies, raffles, and even to help break everything down... even the banquet hall manager talked about how incredibly helpful everyone was.

 

An overwhelming success on all fronts!! We are so touched and blown away by the level of love and support we received from so many incredible people. Our hearts overflow with gratefulness!!

 

Aaaaaaaaand we are astounded by the amount of donations that poured in last night and over the past 2 weeks... 42k pre-raised before the banquet and an additional 40k raised last night (preliminary numbers that are already going up)... that means over 82k raised so far!!! Our goal is 100k by the end of January... we are 82% of the way with 2.5 months to go... WOW!!! Blown away!!!

FAMILY UPDATE... SMALL MIRACLES... THANK YOU SO MUCH 4 UR PRAYS!

 

In September I posted a family update about our 9 month Caregiving journey called "Saddened and Dying From Trying". It was one of many low points that I had experienced this year as my Sister and I took on the role of fulltime Caregivers (you can scroll down to read that post if you missed it). 

 

So here's some good news that I personally think are "small" miracles (we literally feel like people are praying for us):

 

(1) About 6 weeks ago Mom's balance started getting much better! PTL!! Nothing externally has changed to make this happen. Generally speaking, her balance should be progressively getting worse and worse, not better. This is the number one reason we have been by her side 24/7/365... to prevent falls that cause broken bones that cause hospitalization that cause pneumonia that cause death.

 

(2) About that same time Mom's psychotic episodes went from every other day to about once every 2 weeks! PTL!! Psychotic episodes are the really hard part of Alzheimer's... they can start thinking bad things are happening that aren't really happening and then it puts the entire family in crisis prevention mode. It's horrible, exhausting, relentless, and extremely wearisome. Generally speaking, this should also be getting worse not better. No new regular meds. Instead of having a lot of bad days she is now having a lot of good days... and that in and of itself is a game changer. 

 

(3) Our Dad is a "collector" (nicest way I can say it). Miraculously Dad has decided to get rid of all of his "stuff"! For years, and especially this year, we have asked nicely, pleaded, reasoned with, partnered in the work, even resorted to yelling, and done everything we could to motivate this to happen, but none of our efforts have ever made any real progress... not this year... not for the past 40 years. All of the "stuff" causes a lot of tripping hazards so it makes our job (see point 1 above) much harder... as well as low morale (it's very overwhelming to look at and causes feelings of sadness & depression for my Mom... which just makes the whole Alzheimer's challenge that much harder.) Well, praise God, Dad has already hired a couple of guys to haul off stuff... they've already made a big dent in the backyard! This is such an answer to prayer!! I can't even put into words how many ways this one area of progress will positively impact the entire situation.

^^^ All of these things have happened after I posted the last update and people told us that they are praying for us. We literally feel like we are being prayed for and we can't thank you enough!

My Sister and I were worn out and behind on EVERYTHING in our lives. But, miraculously (THANK YOU JESUS!!!), things have changed for the better (with things that "should be" getting worse day by day). This has releaved a lot of weight off of Traci and I (and even our Dad). We have been able to back off of the 24/7/365... and been able to start saving several "sinking ships" in our personal lives that we just had no time or even energy to tend to. Just in the nick of time!! 

  

During this now 10+ month journey we have also had many many good days, hilarious moments, and new special memories along this road this year. Mom loves the orange / vanilla popsicles (so do I!). She wanted to get a family picture eating them and wants to send the picture to the manufacturer of the popsicles... in her words, "Maybe they'll send us a free box of popsicles." She laughs... as we all start laughing!! Alzheimer's has also revealed an even funnier & wittier side of Mom than we've ever experienced before. She has always been fun & funny, but Alzheimer's removes filters and restraints so whatever they are thinking ends up coming out of their mouth. This isn't always great out in public hahaha!

 

Thank you for your prayers dear friends!! The past 6 weeks has been a much needed impact of supernatural proportions! Literally answers to prayers >>> your prayers & our prayers... thank you so much for lifting our family up in prayer!!!

THE GTD HATS, BEANIES, & SWEATBANDS HAVE ARRIVED!! THANK YOU SO MUCH AXCELMARK!

Instead of GTD T-shirts this year we went with GTD hats, beanies, & sweatbands as our main gift to donors of $100 or more (or monthly pledges of $10 or more x 12 months). We love how they turned out, and we can't thank Chuck Stewart of AxCelMark Corporation enough!!
 
* Note: If you did not receive your GTD T-shirt(s) / Donor Gift(s) last year because we had to do the banquet virtually then you can still pick it up at this year's banquet. If you are signing back up to support GTD again this year then you will be able to pick up last year's item(s) along with your choice of this year's headwear. If you are unable to attend the banquet or live outside of the area then we will drop off or mailout your Donor Gift(s) after the banquet.

Kiwanis of Pinellas Park conducts a variety of events, projects, and fundraisers to help support initiatives that benefit the children of our community in conjunction with Kiwanis, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time since 1960. We meet for lunch every Thursday at noon and host a monthly social on the third Wednesday of each month. Everyone is welcome. We hope you will enjoy our hospitality and learn about our many service projects. No invitation is needed to attend a meeting.

The Kiwanis Club of Pinellas Park has been serving the community since 1960. We find that being a member of Kiwanis is one way we can help keep Pinellas Park one of the best places to live. $2000 RESTRICTED DONATION!! ...FOR NEW LARGE CAPACITY GTD WASHER & DRYER SET!!!

 

One of the best and humbling parts of being involved in a non-profit organization is the amazing and generous people we meet and get to do life with. One incredible couple wanted to know what one of GTD's most immediate practical needs is. Over the summer the GTD washer & dryer broke down... that means many trips to the landromat or to friends & family. With the large volume of sleeping bags, cot sheets, towels, etc, etc that we wash & dry on a regular bases we've found that a reliable large capacity washing machine and dryer is one of our most immediate practical needs. Without hesitation this awesome couple sent a check for $2000 for the purchase of a new large capacity washer & dryer set!!! In the non-profit world that is referred to as a "restricted donation" given to be used for a specific purpose. Wow, we are once again blown away by the love and support we receive from a small but mighty army of generous people! Thank you so much to these awesome friends of GTD who saw a need and took the initiative to meet that need!!! We are so blessed to have you as part of the GTD family!! And hopefully we can do your laundry for you whenever you need a break hahaha!! God bless you awesome donors!!!

WHAT'S EVEN BIGGER & BETTER THAN A $10,000 DONATION???...A $10,000 + $1 DONOR MATCH CHALLENGE DONATION!!!

 

Wowwwww, I thought yesterday's GREAT news about receiving a $10,000 donation couldn't get any better. Well, this morning I received a text from our all-time Top Donor who said that they want to do something extra special to commemorate our 25th Anniversary... so they are going to top yesterday's enormous donation by one dollar in the form of a $10,001 Donor Match Challenge... they will match all donations received so far and going forward dollar-for-dollar up to $10,001 total!!!! That means that every dollar you donate will get doubled by them until we hit their $10,001 amount... Basically your donations plus their matching donations has the potential of becoming $20,002!!! WOW!!! That's a HUGE deal to us!!

 

We can't thank this special couple enough!!!! Their investments into this ministry over the years have helped to build what GTD is today! They've helped sustain us, maintain us, and propel us! We are so blessed and thrilled to have their partnership in this ministry! If you have every been on a GTD event then you have directly experienced the impact of their generous giving through the GTD equipment and gear you've used. Thank you so much Mr & Ms Anonymous!!! Your impact is already stretching into our next 25 years of ministry!!

Our 3rd Table Sponsor for GTD's Annual Fundraiser Banquet comes from me [Laurie who is writing this]! Personally, I am very excited to be able to sponsor a table at this year's annual banquet after 14 years of being a part of GTD! I have been a participant, served as a volunteer, and have been on staff for 13 years. I am currently GTD's Rica Missions Director and Prosperity Director.
