DAY 55 (52 Days)

BIG DEVELOPMENTS FOR THE CHURCH IN COSTA RICA! We have been blessed to be a part of meetings between Harvest Church of Watagua, TX and Pastor Danilo of our partner church in Costa Rica. Big things are happening and we can't wait to share with you all the details... but it will have to wait another day after the details have gone public. Just know that it is great news! It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 54 (52 Days)

TEXAS BOUND! We are excited to be a part of Harvest Church's Mission Conference in Watauga, TX (just outside of Dallas) this weekend. Harvest is a wonderful church that has been sending groups down to Costa Rica on mission trips for several years. They have decided to adopt the project and church in Costa Rica. This is a major development and will enable tons of ministry opportunities in CR. Harvest is flying Pastor Danilo in from Costa Rica to speak as well as Laurie & I to attend and be a part. GTD will serve to help partner Harvest with the church in Costa Rica. This is BIG! ...but you wouldn't expect anything else because everything is bigger in Texas =). Stay tuned for more updates. This is an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 53 (52 Days)

CONTINUING ON! GOING THE DISTANCE! So what do you do when a 52 Day campaign completes all 52 days and there is still more wall building to do? Let me answer that with a question, "What do you do when you are running a 26.2 mile marathon and you're only at mile 18 when you hit your 3 hour goal of completion?" Do you stop running or do you finish the race? GTD finishes the race. We go the distance. We continue on. We knew coming into this thing that the time-frame that the Jews completed building the wall of Jerusalem in the book of Nehemiah was unique to their situation. Just because they finished in 52 days doesn't mean we will finish in 52 days no more than if my friend finished a marathon in 3 hours that I will finish it in the same amount of time. We are on day 53 and we aren't finished. GTD finishes what we start so we are striving forward until completion. I'm so pleased with all of the progress so far. We are not the same ministry we were when we started this campaign on Jan 5th. We are better. We are transforming into everything God wants us to be and we aren't stopping because of a date on a calendar. I'm pleased with my personal efforts. I haven't taken a day off in 52 days. I never missed my prayer & Bible reading time. I usually worked 16-20 hours a day from 6:30am till 1 or 2am. I pushed hard for 7 weeks to the point of falling asleep with my eyes open a few times and even hallucinating a couple of times. It wasn't healthy, but I think our supporters and fans would be pleased with my passion and efforts. And now that we are continuing on with our 52 Days campaign beyond the 52nd day we will transition to a lifestyle approach to the work ahead. That means we will take 1-2 days off each week (including a day of rest), work 8-12 hour workdays, return back to physical fitness and healthy nutrition, and spend more quality time with family. All of these things were sacrificed for a season to engage in highly productive workdays, but now we will return to a balance that doesn't drive the body into the ground. So our journey continues. God is doing great things in His timing. The walls will be rebuilt when the walls are rebuilt. We will finish when we finish. Our ultimate goal is to be ready for the next 20 years of ministry by Jan 1, 2016. So we will continue to strive on and post regular updates. We are so enthused about where we are headed. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 52 (52 Days)

LITERALLY REBUILDING THE WALLS OF GTD! Here's a glimpse at one of the transformations going on in the GTD office! This is a wall being built by one of our volunteers and Ministry Partners - Jason Doyle. It's not quite complete, but we LOVE how it is turning out!! As great as it looks in this picture it looks even better in person. Jason has donated his time, talents, and treasure to building this wall. It's being built out of pallets that were donated by Prime Air Conditioning. Jason donated the beautiful electric fireplace. And I (Doug) purchased the TV during a great Cyber Monday sale a few months ago. So the total cost to GTD is about $50 in framework! This wall will become one of the main focal points in the GTD office and we're thrilled with how it's coming together. This wall is a small glimpse at the transformation that is happening in GTD. We are taking what is and making it better. This wall also symbolizes where we are in the "52 Days - Rebuilding The Walls of GTD" process. We are making great progress, but there is still plenty of work to be done. We are so happy with all the improvements. This has been a transformational time in GTD! Tomorrow I will disclose our next steps, but tonight we savor the developments. We have many people to thank for the advancements that are happening, and those public thanks will be shared at the appropriate time. Tonight we thank Jason for all the time, heart, efforts, planning, driving back-and-forth, more time, and financial investment he has made in this wall project. He adopted a section of the GTD wall and took full ownership of it. He's not rushing through it. He's striving for excellence and it's blessing this ministry leaps and bounds. God bless you Jason! There are more positive things to share, but they will have to wait for future posts. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 51 (52 Days)

GTD ANGELS! Working all day and into the night on our 52 Days projects. We are praising God for some real life angels that are helping us rebuild the walls of GTD so we are ready for the next 20 years of ministry. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 50 (52 Days)

PLODDING ALONG! As you can see by these pictures we are up to our eyeballs in office renovation projects. It's part of the process of transformation. Sometimes you have to make a mess to clean things up... in projects and in life. We're not afraid of the mess. Neither should you be. It's part of the process. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD... messes included ;)

DAY 49 (52 Days)

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I only have a couple minutes to make this post so I have to sum it up in a few words: AMAZING, PRODUCTIVE, EFFECTIVE, BLESSED, PROGRESS, ANSWERS TO PRAYERS, INCREDIBLE SERVANT HEARTED PEOPLE!!! We want to thank the fantastic group of young adults from First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks (aka, Smiley's Coffeehouse) for ALL OF THEIR HARD WORK today along with the non-Smiley's volunteers. I wish I had time to mention everyone & everything that they did in this quick post, but I will have to settle for saying THANK YOU TO AN AWESOME GROUP OF PEOPLE who volunteered for GTD today. You did so much and we are forever grateful!! God bless you!!

DAY 48 (52 Days)

GOING VERTICAL! We want to profoundly thank the wonderful group of people who gave their time, talent, and treasure today to participate in GTD's Work Day. They made a huge difference in our ministry today! One of the big projects we are undertaking is "going vertical" with our work space. We are "raising the roof" (so to speak) at GTD party central. One of the best ways to create more usable space in an office or house is to maximize the unused vertical space. In our case, we have nearly 3 feet of additional space above our drop ceiling... so we are raising the drop ceiling up to capitalize on nearly 400 square feet of unused space. This will greatly enhance our storage opportunities, our decorative options, and the overall feel of the place we spent the vast majority of our indoor lives. We believe it will have a game changing effect on GTD as a whole. There were several people who helped us today and we want to express our deep appreciation for the time and effort you invested in this ministry. God bless you! Tomorrow we continue on with our work weekend from 1pm to 6pm. The young adults from Smiley"s Coffeehouse are coming over to help do their part in Rebuilding The Walls of GTD! We can't wait! It's going to be a great final week of our 52 Days campaign. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD =)

DAY 47 (52 Days)

PREPPING FOR OUR WORK DAYS!! We spent today getting all of our supplies ready to tackle several projects this weekend. We will be painting, building, creating, assembling, and much more as we make needed improvements to GTD's central command. This picture doesn't look like much now, but wait till you see the finished product. In fact, stop by the GTD office this weekend and volunteer for a few hours of purposeful work. No matter what we do, it's always a fun time. And, did I mention we will be supplying lunch, snacks, and hydration. God's doing some cool things in this ministry and we would love for you to get more involved. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 46 (52 Days)

WORK DAY(S) #2 THIS WEEKEND!! This is our last weekend during our 52 Days campaign and we are using it for another set of GTD Work Days. This weekend we are tackling several projects including The GTD Office renovations. Our office is where trip ideas are converted into trip plans, where dreams are forged into reality, where spiritual impact is birthed. All of the behind-the-scenes blood, sweat, tears, and prayers that goes into building a God-awesome life-changing event happens in the GTD Office. Without a fully functional office there would be no GTD events. Now is the time to take this office and make it better. We are converting one room into something we are calling "The Launching Pad". It will house a GTD Instructional & Discipleship Classroom, a GTD Rental Gear Section, a GTD Do-It-Yourself Adventure Planning Area, and GTD Gear Storage. We are enthused about the potential impact this one room will have in the lives of many people. Inside and outside projects include painting, construction projects, drop ceiling renovations, storage shelves building, wall building, debris removal, corrugated metal cutting and attachment, pallet disassembly, sanding, staining, sweeping, truck washing, weed pulling, organizing, sorting, recycling drop-off, and the list goes on. It will be a weekend of highly productive work as we transform what is to what can be. Click on the link below to sign-up for a few hours or a few days of volunteer work. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

Work Schedule:  Sat & Mon = 10am - 8pm   |   Sunday = 1pm - 6pm

DAY 45 (52 Days)

INTRODUCING "THE GTD LAUNCHING PAD" PLAN! Our 52 Days campaign is all about the transformation of GTD so that we are ready to go into the next 20 years of ministry. We are now kicking off the process of transforming one large room in the GTD office into something we are calling "The Launching Pad". It will house a GTD Instructional & Discipleship Classroom, a GTD Rental Gear Section, a GTD Do-It-Yourself Adventure Planning Area, a GTD Adventure Travel Agency Workspace, and GTD Gear Storage. This one room will serve as a launching pad into amazing adventures in God's creation, the ongoing development of staff & volunteers, and the spiritual growth in people's journey with Christ. We are thrilled about the potential impact this one room will have in the lives of many people for many years ahead. Someone's going to get saved in this room. Someone's going to rededicate their life to Christ in this room. Someone's going to decide to go into full time ministry in this room. Someone's going to grab hold of a Biblical truth that will set them free in this room. Someone's going to plan a life-changing family vacation in this room. Someone's going to set out on an unforgettable adventure from this room. Are you catching the vision? God's going to use this room to launch people into great things. We can't wait to see how it develops! It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 44 (52 Days)

GTD GEAR CACHES! One of the items we are tackling during our 52 Days campaign is the reality that GTD adventures will be spreading to new locations throughout the US during our next 20 years of ministry (Lord willing! - James 4:15). This poses a new challenge for us. How do we get heavy bulky equipment from Florida to other destinations such as the Grand Canyon, Tennessee, or The Great Lakes? One possible solution is "GTD Gear Caches" in which we place mobile equipment trailers or pods in strategic locations to service designated GTD adventure regions. For example, we run summer Adventure Trips to multiple locations in GA, NC, & TN. All of these locations are within 4 hours of each other. Currently we trailer all of our equipment from Florida to these southeastern destinations. It takes about 15 hours (on a good day) and $1500-2000 in round-trip fuel, vehicle wear and tear, and blown tires (a common occurrence in GTDville) - not to mention the toll of driving a heavy trailer long distances. It also limits our abilities to do more Adventure Trips outside of the summer months because the expense of getting all of our equipment back up to these states has to be passed on to our participants (which can be a deal breaker for potential groups). But with GTD Gear Caches we would duplicated our equipment, place it in a trailer (or mobile equipment pod), and locate in a protected & secure spot near a centralized airport (Atlanta, GA in this case). This would enable GTD to offer year-round adventures in strategic locations and give us the option to drive up or fly up in order to run the event(s). With the growth and development of our backpacking, rock climbing, rappelling, and caving departments we could easily run year-round events (depending on the activity and seasonal climate) in high adventure destinations. GTD Gear Caches will enable GTD Expeditions and increase our ministry impact while supplying additional funding to keep the ministry in good fiscal health. This is one viable option that we are considering that could have enormous beneficial impacts to the growth and expansion of GTD. It's fun to tackle these new challenges and it's thrilling to imagine the future of this ministry. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 43 (52 Days)

WEBSITE IMPROVEMENTS! We've been adding a lot to the GTD website / blogsite. Many of the updates haven't gone "live" yet. Part of our 52 Days campaign is making updates and improvements to anything that helps us accomplish our mission. Our website is our number one resource for marketing, promoting, informing, introducing, educating, and equipping our participants and potential participants about everything GTD. Its value as part of The GTD Wall is without question. For many people, it is their first impression of our ministry and we want it to be a GREAT first impression. It's coming together and we look forward to sharing several new pages and links with you over the next 9 days. And we can't wait to unveil the upcoming event calendar for 2015 and 2016! It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 42 (52 Days)

COMMISSION BASED EMPLOYEES! Part of our 52 Days campaign is looking into the healthiest ways for GTD to expand and grow as we enter into the next 20 years of ministry. After 19 years of running a service based non-profit organization it has become evident that the best way to enable growth, expansion, and increased workforce is by adopting a commission based system that empowers and supports a hard working employee that has an entrepreneurial drive. There are millions of people who could benefit from our unique God-awesome Christ-centered approach to adventures. The wisest (and even Biblically based) approach to growth and increased impact with minimal risk is through a commission based employment structure. I have a lot more to share about this, but I wanted to let our supporters and fans know what we are working on. Pray for this vital & developing part of GTD. Commission based employment is going to open the door of opportunity to many people who feel called to work full time in this outdoor ministry. We hope to kick this off in 2016. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 41 (52 Days)

TREE CLIMBING!! Go climb a tree... literally! Who wants to be a kid again?!?! One of our objectives during our 52 Days is evaluating potential adventures. A soon-to-be new adventure that we are in the process of implementing into the next 20 years of GTD is Tree Climbing! Currently we have to travel 600 miles north of the Tampa Bay area in order to go vertical via rock climbing. Now we will be able to go vertical right in our back yard (well not far from our back yard anyway). With trees abounding throughout the state of Florida, Tree Climbing is virtually a no-brainer. We look forward to introducing thousands of future GTDers to this new adventure. And we are already thinking of great Bible passages that this activity will help bring to life in a whole new way, such as Psalm 1:1-3 "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers." We can't wait to go climb a tree! It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 40 (52 Days)

KEEP ON KEEPING ON! Going The Distance isn't just our name, it's what we do... it's who we are. We are going to finish what we started. Anyone can start something, but are they still keeping on keeping on after the start-up thrill has faded? Are they still rolling up their sleeves and going back to work day-in and day-out. We live in a time in history when giving up has never been easier or more widely accepted. We see it all around us in marriages, parenting, careers, aspirations, dreams, and the list goes on. Once things start getting difficult, too many people start throwing in the towel. And there in lies the tragedy. There is a greater thrill than starting something; it's completing something. Yes, it's great to line-up at the starting line of a marathon with enthusiasm oozing out of every pore and begin running at the sound of the starting gun. But it's so much more incredible to experience crossing the finish line. Overcoming hardships along the way only adds to the satisfaction of completing the race you've started. There is a lot to be said for perseverance. The one who perseveres rarely has regrets. They only have battle scars and cherished war stories of overcoming. Great regrets engulf the quitter. It's day 40 of our 52 Days and we are still keeping on keeping on. We are working day after day at rebuilding the walls of GTD. I haven't taken a day off since we started 40 days ago and I won't relent until it's completed. This is my 19th year of ministry (actually I began working on GTD 5 years before it officially started so technically it's my 24th year of ministry) and I'm still clocking in everyday to build something that makes an eternal impact in people's lives. I haven't done it perfectly. We could be further along than we are right now. But I've never given up. I went the first 6 years without a paycheck. It wasn't until the 10th year that I finally made $12,000 and felt like a millionaire. In 19 years I've put in over 60,000 hours of work into GTD and I've averaged $2.63/hr for my salary. So what's my point? Simply this, rest assured I don't (we don't) give up. We're not in this thing "for the money". This is more than a desire, it's a calling. One thing that can never be said about me is that I quit or that I gave up. Never. Unless God tells me to move on to something else you're going to have to one day peal my cold dead hands off the building blocks of GTD. I'm here to finish what I started. Hopefully that fills you with confidence in this ministry. We are battle tested. We are an all-weather ministry. We are a good investment. We are not giving up. We are keeping on keeping on. We are going the distance. Our desire is to follow in our Savior's footsteps when Jesus said, "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do." (John 17:3-4). Jesus finished what He started and it glorified the Father. That's all I need to know. If Jesus is a finisher then that's what I want to be too. Thank you for following our posts about GTD. We hope you will get more involved with this God-awesome ministry. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 39 (52 Days)

ENHANCING OUR INTERNSHIP DEPT! One of the best ways to get more involved with GTD and serve in a ministry for an extended period of time is to become a GTD Intern. Interns represent the values and mission of GTD while assisting in the work of planning, preparing, and providing the actual events for our participants. Within every GTD event are countless to-do's and work projects that have to be accomplished together as a team in order to provide a God-awesome experience. Tasks may be as simple as washing dishes, unpacking & repacking gear, or as complex as setting up rock climbing routes and leading group devotions. When possible we try to match up an intern's giftedness with actual tasks that correspond with their talents, passions, interest, temperament and spiritual gift. But there are also numerous menial "mundane" jobs that we all have to do as well. Part of our 52 Days campaign is enhancing our Internship Department so that we maximize the opportunity to work with fantastic young people while also offering leadership development and experiential learning that produces management maturation. On top of all of that, it's just plain fun to be an intern in an outdoor adventure ministry! Keep your eyes on our Internship Department as it blooms into its full potential. And prayerfully consider interning with this ministry. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 38 (52 Days)

CAN YOU IMAGINE....
     .... A GTD DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM!?!?

>>> WE CAN! <<<

One of the main ambitions of Going The Distance Adventure Ministry is discipleship. We want to help people go deeper in their relationship with God and grow greater in their Biblical understanding. We want to see people flourish in their walk with God. GTD is thrilled to share with you that we are in the process of developing an adventure themed discipleship series that will spur others on in the faith. Jesus never said, "Go and make converts of all nations." Rather He said, "Go and make disciples of all nations." (Matthew 28:18-20). It was one of the last things Jesus said. Discipleship will be at the heart of GTD because it is at the heart of God. We look forward to this development. Actually it is something that has been on my heart for nearly 25 years, and something that I've worked on as time permitted over the past 19 years. We believe that in time this is going to be the defining aspect of GTD. We can't wait! It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 37 (52 Days)

ATP = ANSWER TO PRAYER! In the body, ATP is "the chemical substance that serves as the currency of energy in a cell". But in the Body of Christ, ATP is the "Answer To Prayer" that serves as the currency of energy in ministry. During our 52 Days campaign we have been experiencing a lot of ATPs (answers to prayers), but none more profound than a growing and emerging army of GTD volunteers. In Matthew 9:37-38 Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Jesus didn't say to go rely on a marketing campaign for more laborers or go place your dependency upon recruiting more volunteers. He said to pray earnestly to the Lord. Praying is the best solution for increasing the amount of co-laborers in ministry. We have been asking God for a whole new generation of GTDers who partner with us to accomplish the mission. And God has been faithfully adding superb high-quality volunteers over the past 5 weeks and they are already making a great impact! And today we were honored to have Kim Leonard join Team GTD and add her expertise and years of experience to assist us in our Administration Program. We are thrilled that God has blessed us with these great new additions!! And we look forward to the impact God is going to make through them. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 36 (52 Days)

CAN YOU IMAGINE...
          ...GTD EXPEDITIONS!!!

>> WE CAN! <<

GTD already takes groups of 15 or more to unique places and introduces them to a variety of adventures, but can you imagine more than what we already offer along with specialized training and smaller group sizes? More than just a taste of the great outdoors?? More than just an introductory course in different adventures??? We can, and we have. We are in the process of building another GTD Program called "GTD Expeditions" in which we will offer high-end expeditions to small groups (up to 10 people) that are longer in duration with top-of-the-line equipment led up by top-notch guides to top-of-the-list locations all over the country and to different parts of the world. Can you imagine touring Moab, Utah on a mountain bike, or a 7 day expedition through the Everglades, or cycling across the United States in 2 months, or section hiking the entire Appalachian Trail (AT) over a period of 20 years, or thru-hiking the AT in 6 months, or 7 days of rock climbing at Yosemite National Park in California, or touring Costa Rica in 10 days, or a 1-week expedition across the Grand Canyon??? There are some outfitters that already offer similar expeditions, but can you imagine doing it with a Christ-centered, God-awesome outfitter that helps you grow closer to the Creator as you venture out in His creation? Well, we can! We want to take you there and help you become all that God created you to be. We are thrilled to be in the process of developing GTD Expeditions! Stay tuned-in to GTD for more information to come. This is an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 35 (52 Days)

WHEN PROJECTS GO AWRY! Wow, it's almost midnight and we have hit snag after snag today (and yesterday) on rebuilding the trailer doors. We are having to call it quits tonight and pick it back up in a couple of days. Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong. On the brighter side, Laurie & Carson got to go spend time with a few new ministry friends, including a woman who thru-hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. We look forward to these relationships growing. I (Doug) had the privilege of speaking/teaching at the young adult ministry at FBC of Indian Rocks. I love the crew out there and enjoyed the opportunity. I haven't taken a day off in 35 days and I'm still plugging along (praise God!). I'm signing off for the night, but I want to thank Jason, William, Laurie, Carson, Traci, and my Dad for their help today. It felt like we took 2 steps backwards today, but I'm confident we will break through soon. God bless!

It's just one of many new additions we are working on in GTD during our 52 Days campaign. And we can't wait to turn it into reality! We are preparing for the next 20 years. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!

DAY 29 (52 Days)

NON-PROFIT COACHING: Laurie & I had a 3 hour coaching meeting with David Brownlee today. David is the Tampa Bay Area Director for Mission Increase Foundation and helps Christian non-profit ministries reach their full potential. We loved spending time with him and taking notes on a wealth of information he had in regards to non-profits. We plan to meet with David every few weeks as he coaches us through some key areas of non-profit growth and development. DAY 28 (52 Days)

Kicked off Feb with a lunch meeting with our newest employee for a little training for the month ahead. Thankfully she will allow us to pay her with GTD Dollars! We convinced her that most merchants take Doug Dollars & Chuck Bucks ;). Looking forward to a transformational month. It's an exciting time to be a part of GTD!
